Interview with coffee producer | Joselyn Fallas

Interview with coffee producer | Joselyn Fallas

01. What is your background before coffee?

"Well, my parents have been producers for a long time, but I started to fall in love with coffee when I went to the National University of Costa Rica to study International Business and Commerce. This helped me understand that I could see coffee as something international, and that the farm could transcend borders and reach lots of people around the world.

I also started to study more about the technical parts of coffee processing, roasting, and coffee tasting. Some of my friends complained about me being boring, talking too much about coffee.

02. What coffee brewing method do you love the most?

"The Origami Dripper isn’t just visually appealing, it also brews a well-balanced cup with great brightness."

03. What is the technical part you care about the most when producing coffee?

"Oh, I think everything matters from maintaining healthy coffee trees and ensuring a healthy environment, to harvesting and processing. Right now, I’m especially focused on learning more about the scientific aspects by reading articles and talking to experts."

04. What is your inspiration?

"Every moment inspires me, waking up and feeling my body, living surrounded by mountains, kind words from friends and family, and the work of other farms I admire.

And maybe even the difficult moments. Sometimes I feel frustrated or demotivated. Things can’t always be perfect. My parents always told me that new opportunities will come when you face hard times and they were right. I experienced that this year. So now, I believe I’m in a moment of reinvention."

05. Is there something you're proud of, or a challenge you’ve faced, as a woman producer?

"I’m very proud to be a woman working in the coffee industry.

I run a farm in a male-dominated field. Sometimes, women haven’t been given the credit they deserve or worse, they’ve been dismissed or humiliated. Some people still believe that a woman can’t manage a coffee farm. That really upsets me. And that’s exactly why I want to keep working on this. I have a strong desire to show that women can manage and lead successfully.

Times are changing, and incredible women are now also leading the coffee industry." 06. Do you have a dream project?

"For sure! I’m a big dreamer. I dream of exploring the world by continuously improving my coffee process, connecting with more people globally, and sharing my coffee with more markets around the world.

Another project close to my heart is being part of CeedSeries again next year. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity they gave me. <3"

Joselyn, thank you for your sweet words. We feel lucky and privileged to know you. Your dream is ours. Let’s go after our dream project, step by step, together.
